Red Cross teams up with soldiers to encourage donations
ENDICOTT, N.Y. -- It's often said that the holiday season is a time of giving. There are some groups that can use even more of that compassion, especially now.

"Typically during the holiday season, our blood supplies get reduced because people are on vacation. A large supply comes from our schools, which will be off during the holiday season," said Theresa Blank, a Red Cross account manager.

That's why a blood drive was held at the Binghamton Armory, sponsored by the Southern Tier Red Cross, the 204th Engineer Battalion, the Family Readiness Group and BAE. Red Cross officials say they're not only looking for first-time donors, but those who can commit long-term.

"Sixty percent of the people that donate, donate one time per year. If everybody donates today were to donate twice a year, we wouldn't have a blood shortage. In fact, if everyone who was eligible donated, we'd have a surplus," said Blank.

Once donors gave blood, they were also able to stop by the webcam booth and tape a message for soldiers serving overseas.

"Anytime you go overseas, especially during the holidays, you're separated from family, it actually can get pretty lonesome," said Jason Davis, the Southern Tier Red Cross deputy director.

They say a message of encouragement, even from a stranger, impacts them greatly.

"I recall very clearly being down in the subways of New York City back in 2001 and we had a school district come to us that provided small magnets that kindergarten children had made for us, thanking us for our service. It brings the morale right up," said Lt. Thomas Rome, the 4th Support Company commander.

Those who missed the blood drive can still send a webcam message if they go to the Southern Tier Red Cross headquarters in Endicott.
