Forsythia is without question the most popular spring flower shrub in upstate New York, but I think it is way overrated.

First of all I think it is too common. You can find it all over the place. Second, it does not bloom nearly as early as some other plants in upstate New York landscapes like witch hazel.

Today we are looking at a large shrub or small tree called cornelian cherry. They grow in clusters of very small greenish yellow flowers this time of year. During the summer it has a nice green leaf that is unaffected by insects or disease. And then in late summer you get some olive sized brilliant red fruit.

Cornelian cherry is great addition to a large landscape, it does not work well next to a front door, but as a hedgerow, it can work very well. You can also spread them out and let them grow into a large tree that can grow to be about 20-25 feet tall.

The last thing to keep in mind is that the tree is extremely adaptable. The only condition it does not tolerate is a wet very soil. So if you have an exposed site or a very dry site this is a great choice. It also is a very beautiful early spring bloomer against an evergreen backdrop.

So keep it in mind, cornelian cherry, it is very easy to find at your local garden center.
