Arrests made in Town of Dix murder

By: Bill Mich

It has been an eventful 48 hours in the investigation of a murder that happened last week in the Town of Dix. As our Bill Mich tells us, after police lost one suspect when he took his own life, then they arrested two other people in connection with the crime. Both arrests came after Daniel Bennett, 31, was shot and killed in his Pearl Street home Friday.

SCHUYLER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The first suspect that authorities were after in connection with a murder in the Town of Dix last week was Thomas Borden, 32, of Corning.

"We passed information on to authorities in Pennsylvania who, when they encountered Mr. Borden, he ended up fleeing and jumping in front of a train and committing suicide," said Schuyler County Sheriff Bill Yessman.

But police say they kept searching for clues and Tuesday, they announced the arrest of Borden's step-brother, Nathan Hand, 25, of Corning. He has been charged with second degree murder and is being held in the Schuyler County Jail.

Just hours later, police said their investigation was far from over and by the evening, they had arrested Alice Trappler, 39, of Addison. She is also being charged with second degree murder and remains in Schuyler County Jail.

Both arrests come after Daniel Bennett, 31, was shot and killed in his Pearl Street home on Friday.

Police would not clarify what role they believe Trappler or Hand played in the crime. Authorities did say the two arrests by no means wrap up their investigation and they still have plenty to uncover.

"We currently have possession of Thomas Borden's truck. We brought it back from Pennsylvania last night. It's up at the State Police Troop Headquarters in Canandaigua for processing and we are executing a search warrant on that vehicle at this time," said Yessman.

More details are expected to be released Wednesday.
