Brian Dwyer - General Excellence in Individual Reporting
Brian Dwyer has been a Reporter/Videojournalist in our Watertown Newsroom for five years. 2011 was a particularly good year for him, one we feel is award-worthy. Early in the year, Brian was invited to travel with Fort Drum’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team to Louisiana, where he got exclusive access to the Army’s intensive week-long “Force on Force” pre-deployment training. He went solo, and came back with a six-part news series, a half-hour special, and a great amount of extra content for our website and video-on-demand channel. In the Spring, Brian brought to light a loophole in New York penal code that led to “Mark’s Law,” providing for stiffer penalties for the murder of an emergency medical provider. In June, President Obama made his first visit to Fort Drum, and Brian was at the forefront of that coverage, ad libbing by phone for about 15 minutes while Air Force One taxied. And in September, Brian produced another excellent seven-part series, this one detailing all the changes that have taken place at the post since the 9/11 attacks. At the same time, Brian is a great storyteller and turns great softer features. The history piece on John Foster Dulles is just one example.
