ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney says nothing she heard at Thursday's raucous budget hearing will change her focus as she presses lawmakers to approve a new spending plan.
Mahoney says she wants to avoid cutbacks in hours and pay reductions for workers, but it's the Civil Service Employees Association itself that has been unwilling to bend to avoid major changes for their members.
"If they believe what they were saying last night, that this is unfair, then they should just give up their raises. The same as I did. All the management employees have. The building and trades union stepped forward and gave back their raises for 2010. The sheriff's deputies stepped forward. They're paying more for health insurance. CSEA wants a raise and that's what you heard last night," said Mahoney.
Lawmakers are due to vote on the budget package next week.
