Utica Curling Club hosts open house
There are plenty of new curling fans following this year's Winter Olympics. Curling events drew big ratings on TV and seem to have developed a cult following. Our Andy Mattison visited one area curling club that's working to capitalize on the sport's recent attention.

WHITESBORO, N.Y. -- Usually you need a membership to hit the ice here, but on Sunday, curling was open to everyone and people from around the region came to try it for themselves.
"I’ve been to the curling club a couple of times as a spectator. Have never been down on the ice, so it was a great opportunity to come and see what it's really all about,” said Barbara Wright, Liverpool resident.
"I’ve always liked to watch it during the Olympics and it happened to fall on my mid winter break from school, so I got a chance to sit and watch all the US games and so I became a curling junkie and so I got really into it,” said Pattie Burns, Syracuse resident.
The Utica Curling Club is almost as old as the sport of curling itself, but this is only the second time they've held an open house during the winter Olympics and they're doing so to gain more interest in the sport of curling.
"More and more people are seeing curling part of our charter is to promote the sport of curling and educational events,” said John Jacon, Utica Curling Club member.
It's a game anyone can play; all you need is a rock and a broom. To some it's a new sport, for others it could be a new family activity.
"My friends and I are actually looking into the lessons they have and we might just actually form a team, you never know,” said Burns.
"When we're driving up here he said, 'I’m going to be the best curler in this car'. I said to him 'those are fighting words,' so he decided he wants to do it now. He's only five,” said Scot Loset, Hamilton resident.
The winter Olympics may be over, but for some, the interest in curling is just beginning.
