BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Philanthropy was the order of the day at Binghamton University's Downtown Center as graduate students gave away $20,000 to several local charities as part of BU's philanthropy incubator.
Agencies are selected by students in the Masters of Public Administration and Social Work as a way to teach them about real-world grant making that has real community benefit.
"First of all, we went out and talked to people in the community. Other agencies, other professionals and got a feeling of what the community need was. And we decided as a class that we'd like to focus our attention on low-income youth and lower income adults," said Carly Constantino.
Seven groups, including the Family Enrichment Network and Boys and Girls Club, received funds ranging from $1,000 to $5,500.
