There are a few different theories about why dogs and cats eat grass. One is that they do it to soothe an upset stomach or your dog may just like to eat grass or is trying to supplement their diet. You can purchase cat grass at most pet supply stores for your cats to enjoy.

If your dog is a nibbler and does not vomit from eating grass there is little cause for concern. If they eat a large amount of grass and throw up frequently it may be time to talk to your vet, there may be something more serious behind the behavior;

"If your dog is vomiting, multiple times you should come in. If it is just once with just a little bit of grass in it, you should wait and see how it goes, unless they are really acting sick, they don't want to eat anything else, look like they are in pain, then you want to bring them in," said Dr. Polly Fleckenstein.

It's also important to prevent your pet from eating grass from chemically treated lawns that may contain fertilizers and pesticides, which can be toxic to dogs and cats. Some lawn care companies guarantee their chemicals are pet safe after 24 hours but to be sure, it's best not to let your pets dine from your neighbor's freshly manicured lawn.

If you are concerned about your dog's grass eating habit, try switching them to a higher quality food or mix in a small amount of spinach or a few bites of a carrot into their diet. They may be trying to get more fiber.
