VESTAL, N.Y. -- Hundreds of students from Tioga County launched out of the classroom and into Space Day at the Kopernik Observatory and Science Education Center in Vestal. Three hundred sixth graders were exposed to the wonders of space at the event.
Engineers from Lockheed Martin were also there to help with the hands-on learning. The activities included Multiwavelength Bingo, a 3-D space tour and even a rocket launch. Organizers say it's important to show students how they can apply the skills they've learned in the classroom.
“What you want to see is science in action and in a real setting and what we have here is research grade equipment that they can actually look through and they get to see Venus in the daytime. Most schools don't have that capability, and with our solar filters too they get to see different parts of the sun. And we're glad for this weather! It's not perfect but at least they got to see something," said Roy Williams, Public Programs Coordinator at Kopernik Space Education Center.
