VESTAL, N.Y. -- Some budding scientists from the Southern Tier are spending part of their summer learning how to create a greener environment.

About 50 of the area's top seventh graders are participating in the Go Green Institute at Binghamton University. The two week program has the students tackling a range of projects including, how to best heat your home, the science behind hybrid vehicles and how to create recyclable iPod packaging.

Organizers say getting kids excited about science early is key to keeping their interest.

"What we find is that seventh grade students, eighth grade students, middle school students are really a pinch point in the education pipeline. We lose a lot of very bright students because while they are elementary school kids, it's kind of cool to be interested in science and math, but when you get into middle school, it's not as socially acceptable," said Wayne Jones, BU Chemistry Department Chair.

This is the third year BU has hosted the program.
