LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- Lockheed Martin in Liverpool is playing host to high school students for day one of a week-long science and technology camp. The camp is sponsored by the Longhouse Council of the Boy Scouts of America's Learning for Life Program.
The students became engineers for the day, participating in activities intended to cultivate their interest in science. The hands-on experience gives them lessons in team building, problem solving and basic engineering. It also helps them get an idea of what career they want to pursue before they go to college.
"They begin to understand, what is it like to work at a place like Lockheed. What are we looking for? We're looking for people who can communicate and can solve problems, who are technically inclined, who like to dig into the issues that don't have an answer and who can work together," said Mike Higgins, Lockheed Martin Event Coordinator.
Throughout the week, the students will be visiting Welch Allen, SRC, CSX and ESF.
Efforts like this one coincide with Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds initiative, aiming to inspire youth to develop science, technology, engineering and math skills. For more information on the initiative, go to connectamillionminds.com.
