SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It's considered a first in Syracuse. The installation of a solar panel system to power an office building.

Synapse, a company specializing in turnkey green building projects, is in the process of renovating the old Water Street gym into its headquarters building. Part of the plan is to install a solar panel system that will generate just under 23 kilowatts of power.

Among those backing the test for the system is local utility National Grid.

"From our standpoint, not only is renewable energy the right thing to do, not only from a social perspective, but, as well, from an economic viability perspective," said Melanie Littlejohn.

The company is hoping to complete its renovation project by the end of the summer.
