It's a tradition that helps North Country college students each year. One school is giving people a chance to pick up professional clothes. Barry Wygel visited SUNY Canton where organizers say it helps students put their best foot forward as they get ready to step out into the working world.

CANTON, N.Y. -- For the past twelve years, SUNY Canton and the American Association of University Women have been hosting the annual clothing fair.

"It's a great opportunity for individuals to give back, if they are retiring, if perhaps they need to refresh their closet a little bit," said Betty Connolly, asst. vice president and event organizer.

The organizing committee collects gently used professional clothing and gives them new life.

"It's a great opportunity for students to come and get just the right outfit for work," said Connolly.

"I was applying for the RA position here last year, and I didn't have any dress clothes for the interview, and I knew I didn't want to go there in sweatpants or jeans, I knew I wanted to wear something presentable. I came here and found slacks and nice button shirt," said Stephanie Longomas, a senior at SUNY Canton and event volunteer.

Stephanie was so grateful for the easy shopping experience that she has spent the last two years volunteering at the event.

"I know they needed a lot of help here. A lot of students come in," said Longomas.

For some students who are a long way from home, the clothing fair may provide an easy way to get ready for a big night.

"I didn't bring any of my real suits around here, so I needed something and I heard it was a really fun experience," said Terry Smith III, a freshman.

While it is free for students to come, try on and take home clothes, they are accepting donations, all of which go to benefit an AAUW scholarship.

Event organizers say in recent years, demand at the fair has skyrocketed.

Even with hundreds of students and community members perusing the selection, there is still plenty to choose from.

The event will continue Wednesday and Thursday and is open to the community. The clothing fair is being held in the Campus Center Intramural Gym on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
