Beds 4 Kids makes $60,000 donation
CHENANGO BRIDGE, N.Y. -- Beds for Kids founder Leonard Hilldale wants to help Southern Tier non-profits rest easy.
"Today I'm donating about 60,000 worth of beds to the Handicapped Children's Association, Southern Tier AIDS program, and a newly forming cancer outreach program." said Hilldale Monday.
The organizations will then distribute these new beds to other people in need.
Kim Gulick, Southern Tier AIDS Program, said, "I think most agencies are aware of this type of a need but nobody knew how to get it started and he happened to see a type of a situation and decided he was going to put an end to it and start to fix the problem. Its beds for kids but it's also for adults."
Hilldale founded Beds 4 Kids 14 months ago. In that time he has donated piles of mattresses-- about $400,000 worth. Monday's giveaway is the largest chunk yet.

Steve Sano, Handicapped Children's Association, said, "Sometimes we get food or money or other items donated, but this is a first for me. This is a guy; Leonard's coming out and doing this all on his own."
Hilldale said his charity is in major need of funding. He said he spends $1,300 a month to keep it going. But now for the first time since he started the charity, he's asking for monetary donations from the public.
Hilldale said, "I'm seriously going broke doing this, but I've never felt better about anything in my life. I've come to the conclusion that the highest purpose a person can have is to serve other people. The awards are amazing, unfortunately they're not financial, but they are absolutely amazing."
He is also looking for any equipment, warehouse space, and of course, good beds. And while Hilldale envisions his charity becoming a multi-million dollar outreach program one day, he knows there's plenty of lifting to do first.
