Technology snags people passing stopped school bus
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Earlier this month we told you about new technology that nabs drivers that pass stopped school buses. Friday, Syracuse Schools and the New York Association for Pupil Transportation released findings from its test run.
They said the bus, which is fitted with a special license plate reader, caught more than 40 cars illegally passing the school bus. That is far above what they predicted for the two week period.
The camera activates when the bus stops and extends its safety arm to drop off and pick up students.

The bus was assigned to a route along Syracuse's south and east sides.
"In the first two weeks we had 46 passes which to us is 46 times that a child in the City of Syracuse was exposed to the possibility of serious injury or a fatality and never going home to their family again,” said NYAPT Director Peter Mannella.
The camera is connected to a Syracuse police database.
Violators receive warning letters.
