Jefferson County participating in online food stamp pilot program
WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- New York State says in this tough economy, it wants to make it easier for people to apply for food stamps. That's why the state is launching an online program for easy access.

State officials from the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance were in Jefferson County Thursday to unveil the program. Jefferson is the first of 11 counties that will participate in the pilot program.

People in Jefferson County can visit either the Community Action Planning Council, Cornell Cooperative Extension, or the Office for the Aging to use the secure website.

"There are a lot of families who are working but still struggling to make ends meet. Particularly as we're seeing an economic downturn, programs such as the food stamps program and other programs offered by our agency are essential," said Beth Berlin, OTDA Executive Deputy Commissioner.

The state hopes within a year, the program will be made available on all computers with internet access and people can apply from home.
