TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Tompkins County man will serve more than a year in jail for the theft and torture of a pet pygmy goat. Rusty Slater, 20, of Newfield, received the maximum sentence of one and a third to four years behind bars.

Last month, Slater pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals and attempted burglary. Police say he stole the goat named "Mama" from the yard of her owner and later tortured and killed her.
