County gets grant money for emergency communications
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Onondaga County legislators are happy about some new grant money coming their way. They say state grants of $4 million will help ease the burden of paying for a new emergency radio system in the county.
However, legislators say they still have a large, unexpected bill to deal with after Governor Paterson vetoed a bill that would have allowed a surcharge on telephone bills to help pay the cost.
With the new funding on its way the county has already ordered the equipment.

"We're going to have to go forward and then continue to make a case to Albany that they need to look at this. Because, it isn't just us. The other communities around Upstate New York are going to have similar issues and I guess, maybe, we're just, kind of, first out of the box," said Onondaga County Legislature Chairman William Meyer.
The new system will allow all emergency responders in the county to communicate with one another. Currently those agencies use different technology and different radio channels.
