New addition at the Ross Park Zoo

New addition at the Ross Park Zoo
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- There's a new addition at the Ross Park Zoo in Binghamton. His name is Benjamin and he's a four-month-old Binturong, also known as a Bearcat.

The $100,000 habitat opened on a rainy Saturday, but still brought out the crowds. Normally found in Southeast Asia, Benjamin is on loan from a zoo in Virginia.

The Bearcat exhibit is part of a larger plan to regain accreditation, which the zoo lost in 2005.

"The lower part of the zoo has been neglected for a while and unfortunately doesn't meet standards. This is the first of hopefully another building in the area that will be put together over the next year,” said Sheila Green, Assistant Zoo Director and Curator.

Officials said the Binturong visit is somewhat symbolic, since nearby Binghamton University's mascot is the Bearcat.
