160 people sickened by clams
ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- The number of people who have become sick after eating bad clams at Hinerwadel's in North Syracuse is now up to 160. That's out of 7,000 the Health Department said could be at risk.

Onondaga County Health Commissioner Doctor Cynthia Morrow said the outbreak may have come from mahogany clams consumed at Hinerwadel's from September 4th through the 16th.

The majority of those who reported illness ate raw mahogany clams.

Hinerwadels gets its clams from a distributor in Maine.

The clams are no longer being served and the county is now working with the state and FDA to have the clams tested for bacteria.

Dr. Morrow described for us the symptoms people have been experiencing.

"Most people are reporting severe diarrhea, most people are saying it's a watery diarrhea and some people are saying that they have had fever associated with it. And, we have had reports, although we're still working to confirm this, that two individuals have been hospitalized," said Morrow.

Morrow anticipates the number of those reporting illness will grow. And she said people may not feel sick for up to 48 hours.

Anyone who thinks they may be affected is urged to contact the Onondaga County Health Department at (315) 435-6607.
