CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. -- More Chemung County families are struggling to get by. That's according to the state of the child report presented Monday by the Every Child Matters Coalition.

The report shows more than 12 percent of families are living in poverty. That includes more than 20 percent of families and more than 50 percent of single moms, with minor children.

A spokesperson says Chemung County attracts people with lower incomes because of the availability of social services and he says salaries are staying steady, but costs are going up.

"It's more expensive to put groceries on your table, it's expensive to heat your house. It's expensive to have a place to live. And if your income is not increasing at the same rate, it becomes more of a struggle every day," said Bill Brodginski, EOP Child Care Deputy.
