Elmira leaders want natural gas drilling to begin
ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Elmira leaders are asking the state to work with "deliberate speed" to move through the process to allow drilling in the Marcellus Shale. They're voting Monday on a resolution, which the city's mayor says summarizes the position of the association of mayors and supervisors in Chemung County.

Mayor John Tonello says the group does not want the state to skip or rush its environmental review, but they do want updates about the timeline. The mayor says municipalities are looking forward to revenue expected from drilling and he and others are confident the gas companies will deliver it, whenever New York State is ready.

"This is not 'they're going to pick up and go to another state.' That's just not going to happen. But the timing is important for our planning purposes," said Mayor Tonello.

The mayor says other towns and villages in Chemung County may pass similar resolutions. The environmental review is expected to continue into next year.
