Tips on hosting a safe holiday party
ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Drinking and driving doesn't mix and if you add bad road conditions, you have a recipe for disaster. St. Lawrence County's Stop DWI program wants to remind drivers to be responsible as they head to holiday parties.

The program says last December, almost 1,000 people were killed in drunk driving crashes nationwide. Representatives say simply planning ahead can save your life.

"Make sure you have a designated driver before you get started. If you drink and you've decided you've have too much to drink, make sure you give your keys to a sober driver," said Michele James, Special

But the responsibility isn't just on the driver. Those hosting parties should also plan ahead. The program has some tips on how to host a safe party:

  • Control access to alcohol you serve. Avoid kegs or punch bowls.

  • Provide food for guests.

  • Stop serving alcohol at least one hour before the party ends.

  • Plan ahead to provide alternate transportation for your guests if they've had too much to drink.
