Students gather for youth summit
CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. -- Young people in Chemung County got together and discussed the issues that are affecting them.
More than one hundred students gathered in Elmira Friday for the county's youth summit. The students studied the results of last year's youth survey. The survey rated young people in the area on dozens of so-called developmental assets. Students at the youth summit then discussed the assets and how they can be realized in their schools and the community.
One youth facilitator says his peers spoke more freely than he thinks they would have in front of teachers or other adults.

"In this setting where we're kids talking to kids, they're more likely to open up and say what their real feelings are about these problems," said Michael Hinman, a senior at Horseheads High School.
Out of the youth summit, participants will come up with a project designed to engage young people in the community.
