New system used to treat prostate cancer

New system used to treat prostate cancer
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Recently we've heard more about new systems helping with treatment on cancer patients and this system is primarily being used on men with prostate cancer. But, one doctor says it may not be long before the Calypso is used to fight other forms of cancer as well.

Doctor Jeffrey Bogart says organ motion inside the body may cause the prostate to move. Electromagnetic chips are placed inside the prostate before treatment. The Calypso is able to precisely locate those chips before radiation therapy. This enables for more accurate and precise treatment and reduces the risk for radiation to cause damage on surrounding organs.

"With that we can monitor even millimeters of motion in the prostate and if the prostate moves too far out of the way, we automatically can shut down the treatment, reposition and make sure that we continue to have the prostate right inside the target," said Bogart.

University Hospital officials say this is the first Calypso system to be used on prostate cancer patients in our region.

Bogart says about 50 percent of men with prostate cancer are possible candidates for this treatment.
