Free income tax preparations for the elderly

Free income tax preparations for the elderly
WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- Time is running out to file your taxes. This Wednesday is the deadline and the Community Action Planning Council in Watertown is trying to make sure every senior citizen gets theirs done on time.

Joseph Filippi says he's been coming to the Community Action Planning Council to have his taxes prepared for at least eight years.

“They're quite efficient here. They don't take long to do it. And get right in. Usually, they set me right up with an appointment every year," said Joseph Filippi, Brownville resident.

They offer free tax filing and counseling for elderly residents in the Watertown area. And they've already filed 840 tax returns this year for more than $700,000 in refunds. The tax preparers are all volunteers certified by IRS.

"Everybody's friendly, good parking outside and we're just in and out usually," said Beverly Hoover, Watertown resident.

If you haven't prepared your taxes yet, don't worry, there's still time.

"We're still here Wednesday. We'll try to do as many taxes as we can," said Gisele Young, a volunteer tax preparer.

And once you're there, those who use the service say it's quick and pain free.

"Just hand them your W2 and they take care of it. They ask you a few questions, which are common in taxes and that's it," said Filippi.

"Most people with a return or two can get their returns done in 20 minutes," said Young.

"It's usually quick and you're out of here in no time," said Hoover.

"If they can't get an appointment to go and see someone, they could easily go online. There's a free file link through the IRS website," said Young.

That free link at IRS.gov is for anyone making less than $56,000. If you make more, there are links to websites that charge to file your return.
