“Titanic” concert to debut Friday
DEWITT, N.Y. -- It's never been done before. A concert version of the Broadway musical “Titanic” is being performed by Jamesville-DeWitt middle and high school students.
"’Titanic’ is a Broadway show with singing and acting, but what we're doing is taking some of the acting out, some of the songs out and presenting a concert version," said Jeff Cox, a senior at Jamesville-DeWitt high school.
And the students are working with a man who knows the music well. Kevin Stites was the musical director for the Broadway production of “Titanic.”
"’Titanic’ was a musical right before the movie came out, the giant movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. It's never been done in this form, as a concert, so this is a very exciting sort of thing," said Stites.

Stites connected with the school's music program through the choral director's brother, who Stites knows from New York City. His new “Titanic” performance will make its debut right in the high school auditorium.
"I was so surprised to hear that, I mean, that's an amazing privilege that we can do that at our random little school district here," said Cox.
There's even a chance that the format for this production could be used in New York City some day, maybe at Carnegie Hall.
"There's a very good chance that it will be. We've talked about, those of us involved in the original company, always talked about wanting to do this in concert because the music is so sweeping," Stites said.
Now that big-city dream is one step closer to becoming a reality.
If you want to check out this unique performance of “Titanic,” you can head to Jamesville-DeWitt High School this Friday. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $5 a piece.
