Family petitions town to dig up war hero
SACKETS HARBOR, N.Y. -- About 200 people, all a part of a group called the Pike Family Association, are looking for answers about their most famous namesake.

Brigadier General Zebulon Pike was a War of 1812 hero who discovered the famous Pike's Peak in Colorado. His grave sits in Sackets Harbor at the Military Cemetery, but a recent study showed that officials are not 100 percent sure it's actually Pike's body in the grave.

They're hoping for closure.

"When we found out that the Army wasn't totally sure who was buried in the grave, we said DNA can answer that question,” said Stu Pike of the Pike Family Association.

So the Pike Family Association is asking the Village of Sackets Harbor for permission to dig up the grave and test any DNA.

"There's always a reason why people do what they do. Conceivably there's more to it than just trying to understand their ancestry. Conceivably there's some money factors involved here. We don't know that, but it makes you wonder,” said Eric Constance, Sackets Harbor Mayor.

The Pike family is planning on shooting a documentary on the quest. It would be about Pike, genealogy, and DNA testing. It's something the family says could bring big attention to the historic village.

"This is a win-win for both the family group and for Sackets Harbor. But I've got to tell you Brian, I'm not sure that I've made that argument totally to them,” said Pike.

"There's a sentiment out there that the feeling, the mood is just let the general rest in peace. There has to be overwhelming reasons why that I'd need to move forward with this project,” said Constance.

The Pikes say they are not going to press the issue if the village isn't interested. They do want to help with the upkeep of the grave site either way.
