Schumer opposes post office merger
NEW YORK STATE -- Senator Chuck Schumer is fighting the U.S. Postal Service's decision to consolidate mail service across the region. The Postal Service plans to close distribution centers in Watertown, Utica and Binghamton and moving their operations to Syracuse.
In a letter to the Postmaster General, Senator Schumer expressed concern that the change would cause harmful delays to business owners and to people living on fixed incomes. He's also concerned about the number of jobs that would be relocated or eliminated because of the consolidation.
A feasibly study determined earlier this year that the distribution centers should consolidate.
