ILION, N.Y. -- While the attacks on September 11th are certainly fresh in people's minds, so is the importance of the men and women who serve as emergency responders.
State Senator James Seward presented three Herkimer County response departments with grants on Friday that will help them better serve the public. Both the Ilion and Little Falls Fire Departments, along with the Kuyahoora Volunteer Ambulance Corps, received funding.
Ilion received the largest amount, $20,000, to be used to improve the 80-year-old fire station. Little Falls received $9,000 for portable pagers and Kuyahoora received $15,000 to update radio equipment.
"Communication is vitally important for our first responders, first in getting the call and getting to the scene of emergency, but also while they're there to be able to talk to the various departments, as well as their home base of operations," said Seward.
A moment of silence was held after the announcement to honor those who lost their lives eight years ago.
