ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- A republican candidate for Congress in the 25th Congressional District is being challenged to defend her position on a health care reform bill.

Ann Marie Buerkle, who wants to replace democrat Dan Maffei, and who is a nurse, has said she would repeal most of the reform plan with the exception of safeguards for pre-existing conditions and allowances for children to remain on parents' insurance plans for several additional years.

At an event on Monday, members of the Nurse Council of the Service Employees International Union welcomed Buerkle's step back from calls for total repeal. But they also claimed there are other key provisions, benefiting millions of Americans, the republican candidate needs to study closely.

"If she is ready to talk specifics, then we as nurses have some questions and we hope that it's finally time that she can talk this through," said Kaye Jaeger.

Members of Buerkle's campaign were on hand to observe and record the nurses' event, but issued no statement.
