ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Taking care of hundreds of children every day has earned a Syracuse area woman some national recognition. The U.S. Small Business Administration has named Stella Penizotto the New York State Small Business Person of the Year Award.

Penizotto owns three Shining Stars Day Care facilities, in Liverpool, East Syracuse and Manlius. She and her staff serve more than 350 children birth to 12 years.

Penizotto opened the first center 16 years ago and says her focus is parents' needs. She won the business award in the Syracuse district, then overall at the state level.

"We think it's so big. We hear it every day from the parents, what a good job we're doing. But it's so great to be honored at such a high level," Penizotto said.

Penizotto and the other winners will go to Washington for National Small Business Week. Events include a trip to the White House.
