OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- There is a house named in her honor for her involvement with the Underground Railroad and now, Harriet Tubman could also have a roadway named after her.
Last week, the State Senate approved legislation to rename State Route 34 the "Harriet Tubman Memorial Highway."
State Route 34 runs from Oswego County all the way down to the Pennsylvania border in Tioga County. Along the way, it passes through Auburn, where Tubman settled in the 1850s.
Senate officials view the bill as a way to further honor one of the area's iconic figures.
"She is someone who made such a tremendous difference in the lives of not only those who live in New York State, but certainly this entire nation so it's the least we can do by way of honoring her legacy and her memory," said Senator David Valesky.
The bill will now move on to the State Assembly for approval.
