AUBURN, N.Y. -- From Auburn all the way to Lake Ontario, engine sounds roared through an 88-mile trail.

"Love. Lots of love. These road warriors are all here today because of love," said Joan Large, a Matthew House volunteer.

"There's probably a poker run or event going on once a week during the summer and these guys just donate like crazy at every event. They have big hearts and they live to give," said Henry Dacy, the Monster Poker Run's organizer.

This year's Monster Poker Run was to benefit the Matthew House in Auburn. It provides an alternative setting for terminally ill patients and their family members. Since opening in 2002, the group has served more than 140 people. When Dacy heard of the local group, he says he couldn't ignore them.

"Everybody goes through this sooner or later. It seems more and more friends you find out that need to have hospice care," said Dacy.

The not-for-profit takes no public funds and relies solely on donations and volunteers, so Saturday's turnout really hit home for the Matthew House.

"It says we care. We care and we're willing to walk in that care and we're able to give where we can give and the community as a whole has this kind of a heart," said Large.
