ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- A U.S. veteran lost near 60 years ago in battle is finally laid to rest. Army Corporal Frank Smith was a native of Liverpool who was killed in action in the Korean War back in 1951. His remains were finally returned home this week.
Family and veterans were on hand Thursday for the long-overdue service. They may not have known Smith, but they knew the commitment he made to his country.
"It's a member of the U.S. service, regardless of what branch of service he was in. They were still there, but we fought it together, side by side, you know," said Sgt. Barry Lashomb, a Korean War Army veteran.
Prior to his death at the age of 23, Smith had already been injured in battle in the Korean War and received a Purple Heart for his service. He returned to the battlefield, where he was later killed.
