BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena is nearing its financial goal for a new project to honor those who have served our country. It centers around a display case 18-feet long and seven-and-a-half feet high.
Inside, five mannequins representing the last five wars and conflicts will be on display. After a fundraiser dinner Friday night, $20,000 of the $25,000 needed have been raised.
Many of the tributes and displays currently at the arena haven't been updated decades. While it's the entertainment and sporting events that typically draw fans to the arena, organizers hope their efforts will revive the true purpose of the facility.
"I think the tribute to vets got lost in the arena and I think this showcase will highlight that, that we do honor the vets in the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena," said Joe Coffey, a member of the arena's board of directors.
Coffey would like the display completed by July 2011, just in time for the American Legion Convention.
