SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- If you're on the Syracuse University campus, you may notice something special there: Orange paper cranes. It's all part of Project Paper Crane in Syracuse, a student-led fundraising initiative to benefit victims of the tragic tsunami in Japan last month.

The orange cranes can be found on the lawn between Schine Student Center and the Newhouse Complex. For every $2 donation made, a paper crane is added to those already there. All of the money raised will go to Japan Societies Earthquake Relief Fund.

Faculty members at SU are hoping the initiative will foster a higher sense of community and support for international students.

"The actual construction of the cranes was a group project. It is a physical manifestation of the empathy felt by really the whole Syracuse Community for our international students, and of course our Japanese students," said Dr. Geraldine dr Berly, Syracuse University English Language Institute Director.

Students participating in Project Paper Crane in Syracuse hope to raise $14,000 and produce 7,000 orange cranes. So far, they have raised about $5,500.
