Increased patrols near gorge after two student deaths

Increased patrols near gorge after two student deaths

ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) - Cornell University campus police and local law enforcement will increase patrols near the Ithaca Gorge after two students died in separate incidents over the holiday weekend.

Ithaca police say a body was spotted in Fall Creek Gorge early Saturday afternoon and was later recovered by emergency crews.

University officials say the victim was an international student visiting Cornell for the summer.

Authorities say the person apparently fell while walking off-trail along the gorge. The person's name hasn't been released.

Around 4 p.m. Saturday, emergency crews returned to the gorge after a man was reported missing while swimming near Ithaca Falls.

Officials say a State Police dive team later recovered the body of Nathaniel Rand, who would have been entering his senior year. His hometown wasn't released.

Swimming is prohibited in the creek.
