Airport has big impact on local economy

A recent study reports that the airport pumped more than $52 million into the greater Binghamton region in just one year. Our Carmen Perez explains how this figure trickles down and what it means for the airport's future.

BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- At least three or four times a day, you can find one of University Cab taxi's at the Greater Binghamton Airport.

"A big chunk of our business comes from the airport," said Matt Ortloff, manager at University Cab.

With the airport generating more than $52 million in 2009 alone, it is bound to have a positive impact on the outliers.

"We get a lot of student business out of the airport, but, as well as, you know, other businesses. A lot of people traveling from other businesses and stuff also," said Ortloff.

According to a recent study, the Greater Binghamton Airport is solidifying its presence as a major economic player in the region.

Carl Beardsley, the B.C. Aviation Commissioner, said, "For us it confirmed that the airport is an economic driver, a respectable economic driver in this community."

The airport says in the next five to 10 years they plan on expanding. Making sure they continue to be an economic force in the Greater Binghamton Region.

Patrick Brennan, the Broome County Executive said, "The master plan calls for some expansion that will drive some more economic impact create jobs with aviation related industry."

More economic impact means a continued boom in sales for outlying businesses like University Cab.

"They help us with good business we try to help them with good service also," said Ortloff.

Reaping the benefits from one of the county's biggest economic money makers.

Broome County officials say they have plans to build a corporate park on the airport's property in the next five to ten years.
