BU student dies in Costa Rica

COSTA RICA -- A Binghamton University student from the Hudson Valley dies in a car accident in Costa Rica.

A BU spokesman says Zoe Damon of Kingston was killed when the van she was riding in went off the road Thursday. Damon was a biology major participating in a summer research experience in the country.

According to a report in a Costa Rican newspaper, the van skidded on a road and fell into a river at the bottom of a ravine. It took rescuers about two hours to get to the victims.

Three other people were hurt in the crash, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

According to the report, those three were identified as Danielle Stocks, Katherine Pan and Maggie Oveas.

University officials say they're working with Costa Rican authorities to transport those involved in the crash back to the U.S.

Meanwhile, counselors will be on call at BU for anyone who needs them.
