NELSON, N.Y. -- Just after midnight crews responded to an intense fire at the
Cazenovia Equipment Company, a popular farm supply store, located on Route 20 in Nelson.
Cazenovia Fire Chief Gilbert Hodges told YNN, “The structure was 50 percent involved at that time and quickly spread to the entire structure. By the time we began operations the roof had collapsed.”
The fire destroyed the entire parts warehouse and several service vehicles. This location is the hub for ten other stores located across Central New York.
Heavy smoke could be seen from the roadside on Route 20 through the morning hours. Although the facility is being called a total loss it won’t stop the owner from rebuilding.
Owner Jim Frazee says that despite the facility being a total loss he plans to rebuild.
Owner Jim Frazee says, “We will rebuild and be as good as we ever were or even better. The facility doesn’t make the company. It’s the team of employees and the customers that we serve. That’s what’s going to make us regardless of what facility we are in or not.”
Frazee says 30 employees worked at this facility and thankfully no one was there when the fire started because it was after hours. Although one firefighter did suffer a minor injury it could have been much worse.
Cazenovia Fire Chief Gilbert Hodges told YNN, “This is a great testament for the volunteer fire service and working together to put this out. [The fire] had a heck of a head start on us and everybody worked well together to make the best of what we could. Unfortunately it was a total loss.”
All 30 employees who worked at the Nelson facility will be temporarily repositioned so they won’t be out of a job while they rebuild.
There's no word yet on what sparked the fire. Fire crews will be at the scene throughout the morning to access damage and investigate the fire.
