ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Clarkson University is planning to open the North Country's First Green Data Center.
On Monday, the college announced its plan to create a research facility to assist Beacon Institute in their research of rivers and estuaries. The University received a million dollar research award by IBM to create the new facility.
Clarkson will be using IBM technologies and renovating its Old Main Building in downtown Potsdam.
Clarkson says this new data center will allow New York to be the leader in research and education for water innovation.
"This area that Clarkson and IBM are partnering in, very likely could be equivalent to the race to the moon for previous generations. This is a very exciting venture. It is the forefront of technology and science and it's really no surprise that IBM and Clarkson are really on the ground floor of this," said Assemblywoman Addie Russell.
"This intuition, I believe, can make absolutely not just a national, but an international reputation for being the institution that translates the research we do in our labs into real applications that are critical to the development and progress of the world," said Clarkson University President Tony Collins.
Clarkson and Beacon Institute's new alliance, will allow for continuous monitoring of physical, chemical and biological data from New York's Hudson, Mohawk and St. Lawrence Rivers. Green technologies will also be incorporated in the renovation of the Old Main building and it will be restored to its historic standards.
