SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A $10,000 grant is helping to train some Syracuse elementary students on proper nutrition. It's called the Health Eating Habits at Hughes program and it's put on by Crouse Hospital.

Students at the Hughes Elementary School can participate in monthly after school cooking demonstrations where they learn about healthy eating habits. The hospital's executive chef cooks the meal with some help from students and they even get to take some home to share.

The hope is to expose the children to foods they may not normally see.

"Well, the key to it is having them try different foods like tilapia. Today I have a fresh tilapia that I brought in, show them what it looks like and they can actually visualize and see it," said Crouse Executive Chef Todd Corcoran.

"Our goal is to keep bringing in more families and exposing more of the families and the kids to these different recipes, these healthy types of recipes," said Maureen Fauler, Crouse Hospital Clinical Nutrition Manager.

The grant comes from the Jim and Juli Boehiem Foundation. Wegmans is also providing additional support to the program.
