David Fillers remembered at benefit
It's been nearly two weeks since the body of Dickinson resident David Fillers was found in a creek bed behind a Vestal motel and a former classmate has been arrested in connection with his murder. Friends and family members are still coping with the loss. Our Melissa Kakareka was there as many of them came together to remember Fillers on Saturday.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The life of 21-year-old David Fillers was cut short after a night out with friends on New Year’s Eve. The loss still weighs heavily on the minds of those who knew him.
"I miss the kid. He's always going to be missed by everyone that's here today," said friend Mat Shumaker.
"I grew up across the street from him and his family. I grew up with all the boys. It’s just tragic what happened to him," said friend and benefit organizer Brandon Doyle.
Friends and family came together for a benefit in Filler's honor at the House of Reardon in Binghamton Saturday. Many who attended wore t-shirts bearing David's name and shared memories of their friend.
"One of the most genuine kids I ever hung out with. He was very happy and always there to help people out. Always very nice. You could always get a laugh from him," said Shumaker.
"He liked to do fireworks a lot. I'm pretty sure he'd eventually give NYSEG Stadium a run for their money and he had this bunny costume that we put on the memorial page on YouTube. He just loved having fun," said Doyle.
David was a graduate of Chenango Valley High School and an aspiring engineer. Saturday's event raised money to help his name live on in others.
"We're going to do a scholarship for a Chenango Valley student who wants to go into engineering. We'll probably get that set up toward end of the semester," said Doyle.
And it helped many people celebrate the time they were able to have with their friend.
"I think it’s good for everyone to come together to celebrate David's life instead of his passing. Everyone gets to see that he was loved by everyone," said Doyle.
