SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The top of a double decker trailer carrying 34 cows hit a railroad bridge in Syracuse, killing some of the cattle onboard. The accident happened at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of West Genesee Street and Erie Boulevard.

The driver, who was coming from Sennett, New York and headed toward Philadelphia, was not injured. Police closed off the portion of Genesee Street to move the cattle truck and inspect the bridge.

In addition to those killed in the crash, some of the injured animals may have to be euthanized.

"The place where the cattle are coming from are going to send some personnel down to try to determine what the status is of the cattle that are still on board that might still be alive," Syracuse Police Sergeant Tom Connellan said.

Officials say the driver was trying to following street directions given to him at the time of the crash and likely didn't see the height limit of the bridge.
