ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Military bases and related industries are cringing this week at another possible round of Base Realignment and closures, known as BRAC. The fears come as the Department of Defense announced budget cuts of anywhere from $250 to nearly $500 billion in the next five to ten years.

Mohawk Valley legislators are scrambling to make sure the Defense industry at Griffiss Business and Technology Park in Rome stays intact. The complex is home to dozens of businesses and government funded organizations, including the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Defense Finance Accounting Service.

Cuts to defense spending could lead to large cuts in operations and jobs at Griffiss.

State Assemblyman Anthony Brendisi sent a letter to Governor Cuomo asking for state assistance. He says there is a long fight ahead to avoid cuts.

"What we saw from previous BRAC hearings, that it takes a total team effort: Local officials, state representatives and our federal and industry representatives coming together," Brindisi said.

Even though many of the jobs at Griffiss are private sector jobs, the Department of Defense cuts could still affect them because it calls for reductions in contract services.
