OSWEGO, N.Y. -- A local heating contractor gave carbon monoxide checks free of charge Wednesday in Oswego County.
'Breathe Easy CNY Heating and Cooling' conducted these free checks on the second anniversary of Amanda's Law, which was made in honor of Amanda Hansen, a Buffalo teen who was killed from carbon monoxide poisoning.
The law now requires carbon monoxide detectors to be installed in homes that have any fuel-burning appliances or an attached garage.
Experts urge people to check their C-O detectors regularly and if the alarm does go off, not to take it lightly.
Herb Smith, President and Owner of Breathe Easy CNY said, “If it does alarm, for whatever reason. Find out why it's alarming. Just don't unplug it, just don't take the battery out and say I'll deal with it in the morning, because you may not make it to the morning."
Families should have their C-O levels checked by a certified professional at least once a year.
