CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. -- The future of the First Arena in Elmira has been in question for a few weeks and now that uncertainty may last until the summer.

Monday night, Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli recommended that the county legislature, for the time being, not accept the money to save the arena from foreclosure.
Santulli said he wants to launch an investigation into how the arena has operated in the last 12 years.

The county executive said it may be time to look in a new direction after discovering some major concerns.

Santulli said, “There has been times where there was no insurance on the facility. No fire, no liability, fire systems. I just can't imagine, for the life of me, how they allowed this facility to be operated when there was not a working fire alarm and there were questions about the sprinkler system."

The county legislature will vote next Monday night on whether or not to accept the County Executive's recommendation on the First Arena foreclosure.
