NEW YORK STATE -- It is one of the faux pas that candidates try desperately to avoid, but often make. Downstate Congressman Bob Turner is on his first tour Upstate seeking support in the race for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate. He has, again and again, said he knows the issues and the people of the Upstate region.

Critics of Turner's candidacy were quick to point out, though, that he may need an Upstate spelling lesson. In his announcement of an appearance Wednesday in Binghamton, Turner and his staff have an extra letter in the city's name, making it "Bing-HAMP-ton."

Turner's press secretary says she is the one responsible for the typo. She says a new version of the announcement has gone out with Binghamton spelled without the "p".
