HORSEHEADS, N.Y. -- Though it may not look like it, spring is here and that means road construction season has arrived.

This week is National Work Zone Safety Week and officials from the Department of Transportation are urging drivers to slow down in construction zones.

Last year, there were almost 400 accidents in work zones across New York and officials would like to get that number down.

"The primary contributor to those accidents is excessive speed, people driving too fast. So the important thing to remember for folks is when you see the orange barrels and the cones and the signs, please slow down to keep both you safe and the workers safe," said NYSDOT Acting Regional Director Brian Kelly.

Officials are also raising awareness of the newly expanded Move Over Law. The law now says drivers must move over if any vehicle is flashing amber lights on the highway.
